This necklace design highlights an older style of Victorian-era buttons characterized by chased or hammered brass. Metalworkers forged the lovely designs on these buttons by ‘hammering’ on their backside to create a low relief design or ‘chasing’ on the front side to sink the metal.
Your brass button will be a one-of-a-kind antique and, therefore, will vary slightly from the one shown here.
In this design, the antique button holds a lyrical brass stamping that blends the flowing lines of Art Nouveau with the more angular symmetry of Art Deco, creating a subtle early 20th-century motif.
A midcentury German givré glass drop anchors the design. Givré glassmakers use a lampworking torch to heat glass and then a swirling technique to create distinctive opaque color ribbons.
