We named these earrings Deiji, which is a typical Japanese name meaning Daisy.

They flaunt two pieces of hand-pressed Japanese glass featuring daisies blooming with clover. They're midcentury versions of popular glass flower stones made in Czechoslovakia in the 1920s and 1930s.

Before WWII, most Japanese glassmakers were rice farmers whose glassmaking was a hobby. However, during the post-war American occupation of Japan, glass cabochon commissions from American jewelry makers created new economic opportunities. So many of these rice farming glass artists set up lampwork workshops in their homes and started producing glass beads for export.

American agents provided samples of the molded Czechoslovakian flower cabochons, and the Japanese artisans quickly learned to produce similar glass beads like those in these earrings.

Hanging from the flower stones are two lovely vintage iridescent blue crystals.

In this piece:

  • Two turquoise glass flower stones, made in Japan circa 1945-1951
  • Two vintage blue crystal glass stones
  • Brass three-ring stamping made today in the USA in vintage dies
  • Nickel-free & lead-free brass euro wire closures
  • Hangs 2"
