While many Victorian-era buttons feature dogs, few depict cats because cats were not then commonly adopted as house pets. In the 19th century, cats were considered utility animals who lived outside and kept mice and vermin at bay. They were not wholeheartedly received as indoor pets until the early 20th century.
Thus we were thrilled to discover the glass cat buttons featured in these earrings. This cat, depicted in gray glass, is one handsome fellow.
These distinctive buttons were hand-pressed in antique molds and manufactured using centuries-old processes by one of the few remaining Czech glass button pressers still working today. The gold accents and blue eyes were then painstakingly hand-painted.
